Letters to Mayo Clinic

Mounib is doing great. He had his first visit at the Mall in Rochester this last Saturday, he was so excited playing, and smiling with his mom, in about two days he will be transferred to a rehabilitation center to have more training so he can be able to walk. He can stand and move his leg. He just needs some exercises to muscle his legs.

Mounib va très bien. Il a visite durant ce samedi passe le Supermarché de Rochester. Selon sa mère, Il était très content. . Dans deux jours il sera transfére dans un centre de rééducation pour avoir davantage d'exercice physique. Il peut se mettre debout, et il peut bouger ses jambes, Il a juste besoin d'avoir une bonne masse musculaire pour pouvoir marcher.

• Thanks to the efforts of  the Algerian community, Mounib has now been in the US since May 16 2008 under the care of a strong medical team in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.
• The AAAGW Vice President Mr. Smail Farid and Dr Stambouli have visited Mounib and his mother last weekend. They spent a great time with Mounib.
• On Monday, June 2nd, 2008 , Mounib had his last surgery. A definitive shunt cerebral has been done. Dr. Meyer has informed us that the surgery went well and the only risk during the next two weeks is contracting an infection. He said we need to cross our fingers so nothing will happen during this period. Otherwise, Mounib is doing great. He smiles, talks and even plays with his toys. He will start very soon his physical therapy.
• AAAGW now has settled the plane bill.

• A compatriot is working on a memorandum to the Algerian government recommending some actions to address similar cases, based on our recent experience with Mounib.

The AAAGW Vice President Mr. Smail Farid and I have visited Mounib and his Mom last weekend. We spent a great time with Mounib. On Monday, June 2nd, 2008 , Mounib , inchaallah, had his last surgery. A definitive shunt cerebral have been done. Dr. Meyer has informed us that the surgery went well and the only risk during the next two weeks is contracting an infection. Mr. le Vice Président Smail Farid de l'AAAGW et moi même avons visité Mounib et sa Maman le weekend dernier. On a passé des moments agréables avec Mounib. Lundi, le 2 Juin 2008, Mounib a eu sa dernière chirurgie, un shunt cérébrale définitive. Dr. Meyer nous a informé que le seul risque durant ces deux semaines pouvait être une infection. Par ailleurs, Mounib se porte bien. Il rit, parle, s'amuse avec ses jouets.
Mounib commencera la réeducation très prochainement.

The Back Surgery has been done for Mounib and lasted 8 to 9 hours. Mounib is still in the recovery room. The Shunt Ventricular regarding his hydrocephaly was not done yet. The Doctors seem very satisfied. They said, Mounib can think about his future now. He will have a long term of physical therapy.

La chirurgie au niveau de son dos a été faite et a duré 8 à 9 h. Mounib est encore en salle d’observation. Le Shunt Ventriculaire cérébrale concernant son hydrocéphalie n’a pas été fais encore. Les Drs sont très satisfait de leur travail. Ils ont dit que Mounib peut déjà penser à son avenir. Il aura une longue période de rééducation.

Mounib’s condition is getting better; (El hamdoulillah). The surgery is scheduled on May 27, 2008. Dr.Azzedine Stambouli will visit Mounib next weekend (Incha Allah) to evaluate the future needs and to elaborate a proper management of his case.

L'état de Mounib va mieux ; (Hamdoulillah), Il s’améliore de jour en jour. La chirurgie est programmée pour le 27 Mai 2008. Dr.Azzedine Stambouli visitera Mounib le week-end prochain (Incha Allah) pour évaluer les futures besoins et pour élaborer une gestion appropriée de son cas.

Mayo Clinic is treating Mounib in the most appropriate way with regard to the seriousness of his disease.
Due to his physical condition, the medical team has decided to postpone the surgery to a new date. More nutritional fluids and a special dietary have been prescribed to strengthen him in a way that he will be ready to undergo a lengthy surgery.
Mounib is continuing having fever, additional antimicrobial therapy has been added and more investigations are on the way. In the meantime, He has already started his physical therapy.

Mayo clinique est entrain de traiter Mounib dans la manière la plus appropriée en relation avec son état médical. En raison de sa condition physique affaiblie par les récents événements (infections)  son opération a été reportée à une date ultérieure. Néanmoins sa condition s’améliore de jour en jour.
Mounib continue à avoir de la fièvre, des antimicrobiens ont été ajouté au traitement initial et des nouveaux  examens sont entrain de se faire. Cependant, il a déjà commencé á faire des exercices physiques pour muscler ses membres inférieurs.

Mounib will have a long and difficult surgery, with duration of 15 to 19 hours on Thursday May 22^nd, 2008. A team of 13 physicians will be available during this surgery. A problem has happen, which has bothered a lot the medical team, the Spinal Nerve is adhesive to the Skin, Supposedly needed to be isolated during the first emergency surgery in Algeria. So the Spinal nerve is adhesive to the skin and has caused an infection. The Surgeon will spend a big time detaching the Spinal Nerve.

Mounib aura une longue et difficile chirurgie ce Jeudi 22 May 2008.  L’opération va durer environ 15 à 19 heures. Un groupe compose de 13 médecins sera dans la salle effective pendant la chirurgie. Un problème a surgit et a gêner considérablement les chirurgiens, qui ont découvert que le nerf spinal est colle a la peau. Le paquet nerveux devrait être isole durant la 1^er intervention en Algérie, qui a causé une infection. Les chirurgiens vont passe des heures pendant cette phase a décolle le nerf de la peau.

Mounib et sa mère sont bien arrivés à Rochester, MN vers 8 heures du soir.  Il est déjà hospitalisé.

• Child Mounib still in critical but stable situation at Hospital Mustapha in Algiers.

• We have contracted with Aero Care, Airline Ambulance, to transport him to Mayo Clinic is Rochester, MN, Ranked # One Hospital in the US. http://health.usnews.com/usnews/health/best-hospitals/search.php?spec=ihqneur
  Mounib and His Mother will leave Algiers and Arrive at Mayo Clinic on Thursday May 15, 2008.
   

• The cost of the flight is $93,500. We had paid $45,000; the money was collected in UK and deposited at Children Hospital in DC.
  Algerian Association in Calgary Canada collected and transferred $6,000 to AAAGW account.
  CCA and Astrolab, Montreal, Canada collected $10,000, they will transfer directly to Aero care.
  AAAGW collected $20,000; we will transfer to Aero Care.
   

• Therefore, we have $81,000 of the $93,500 for the flight. Please donate and encourage others to do. So we can pay for the flight. We are short $12,500
  Thank you to MAYO Clinic whom agreed to treat Mounib.
   

• We are in contact with the Algerian Embassy in Washington DC and the US State Department to facilitate Mounib travel.

Mounib is still in critical condition at the Mustapha Hospital, Algiers but the vital signs are normal, good BP, normal pulses, no fever.Air Med, Air Ambulance Company would not fly Mounib unless we pay the full price of $96,000. Since we do not have the total amount, we have contacted Aero Care, an Air Ambulance based in IL. They accepted to transport Mounib for $93,000, and willing to fly him even without paying the total amount, as long as we guaranty the payment. We have deposited $45,800 (money from CNMC Washington DC) to the Aero Care Account to speed up the process. CCA (Centre Culturel Algérien) in Montreal and AAAGW will wire the funds raised to Aero Care account.We are seeking other alternatives. Aero care is facing some communication problems with the Doctors working at Mustapha Hospital in Algiers. They promised they will get Mounib in the Middle of the next week and will need a very special medical team for Mounib’s case.

We would like to inform you, that Mounib's future destination for medical treatment will be at the Highly Ranked Hospital and one of the best in the United States, MAYO CLINIC, Rochester Minnesota. An algerian family is willing to host Mounib and his mother.

The Mounib's case is getting closer to achieving it's goal, that is getting the child the necessary treatment.

The Family is seeking the US VISA this week.

Children National in Washington DC received $45,000 from UK, of a total cost estimate of $110,000. This estimate is based on three weeks hospitalization. Dr. Keating's fees will be waived.

Duke Medical Center and Texas for Children estimate the treatment to cost to be around $100,000 (no written document from them yet)

Children Texas Hospital has given an estimate of $77,000 for one week hospitalization. Doctors' fees are waived.

We are waiting for cost estimate from Mayo Clinic, Boston Children and Philadelphia Children.The radiothon, sponsored by CCA/Radio Salam in Montreal, started last Saturdays. The money starts coming. The donation will be sent directly to the hospital.The AAAGW is close to $12,000 and we expect the donation to keep coming. Please do your part. Other organizations and small donors in Canada are raising money for Mounib. They will send the money to CCA Canada or AAAGW.Algerians all over the states, NC, Boston, NY, NJ, MD, VA, DC, Texas, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Florida, Chicago are getting organized around this case to raise money for Mounib.

After receiving the cost and treatment options from top children hospitals, the family and doctors will decide the best options for the child Mounib.
